Jason walked out the barracks into the training fields. They were empty now, the sessions long over for the day. Pace hung brightly in the sky as Jason grabbed some targets and set them up around the dirt. Striking them into the ground with the hammer, he created a circle of dummies around him, seven in number. He threw the hammer into the basket and sat in the center of the circle.
Jason meditated, he sat in the dirt, thinking of nothing. He focused his energy on the opponents around him. In his minds eye he saw each one, pinning down the location of their weakest point. Spear lain at his side, he waited.
In a flash he was up, spear in hand and thrusting forward. The first dummy took the spear straight in the heart, and he pulled it out with speed matched by few. Swiftly the next dummy was decapitated with one quick swing, and Jason stabbed the third dummy in the chest as well.
Looking over his shoulder, the "men" behind Jason were advancing. He spun around and launched the spear across the circle, striking the middle dummy straight through the head. Running across, he kicked the dummy on the one side, and launched himself forward to grab his spear. Landing in a crouch, he spun on his heels and stabbed up at the other dummy, getting him in the groin.
Finally, only the "man" he had kicked was left. He pretended the dummy was staring him down, and he moved about, staring back at its faceless straw-filled head. After a few moments Jason ran forward, stabbing into the ground where the opponent's foot would be, and grabbed hold of the dummy's arm. Bending over and shifting his hip, the pulled the dummy out of the ground and smashed it into the dirt with a hip throw. Grabbing his spear, he stabbed into the dummy's chest to finish it off.
"Well bravo, what an inspiring performance."
Jason turned to see Vakati'duulo sitting on the other side of the short fence that surrounded the practice ring.
Jason bowed and gave a smile. "Thank you, thank you, please, no autographs." Vakati smiled, stepping easily over the tiny fence.
"Your skill is great Master Jason, but I believe I can do better." Jason laughed and set up the dummies again.
"Show me how it's done then," he mocked, knowing pretty well exactly what Vakati was going to do.
Vakati walked into the middle of the circle, and laid on the ground. With one puff of air, he opened his mouth and scorched the first dummy in front of him. Being made of straw, the dummy was gone in seconds.
"Very impressive indeed for disposing of one enemy, but what about the rest?" Jason continued, and he delighted in watching his Familiar at work.
Raising to his feet, Vakati spun 180 degrees on his legs. His tail swept through the air, taking out three dummies on its course. At the same time Vakati launched his fire breath again and scorched to cinders the other three.
"How was that Master?" Vakati looked over at him, giving Jason an "I told you so" smile. Jason just laughed, waving for him to come over.
"You are indeed strong Vakati, I'm glad your on my side."
Vakati walked past the scorched wooden bases and joined his Master to look up at the moon.
"Trust me Master, there is no other side I'd wish to be on."
