Grey walked into the teaching chamber, feeling the eyes of every student in the room turning upon his arrival. The room went silent as he moved to the front, where he sat down on his beautiful leather arm chair. He turned to stare out the window beside him. His eyes skimmed the landscape, taking in every detail of that beautiful golden day.
Without looking back, he heard the rustle of chairs and the pushing of tables aside to sit before him, on the ground. All the children knew that, when the Councilor sat in his arm chair, there was going to be a story to tell.
Grey turned to them, taking in some new faces at the back of the group as he did so. He gave them a reassuring smile.
"Hello class. Today, I thought on my way here, that many of you may have never learned about our lands." He looked at each individual for a second each, then posed them a question. "Who can tell me anything about the world we live on?" He waited. No hands. *Sigh*.
"Well, I best start at the very beginning then." He sat back and began, reading, from inside his head, the ancient scroll that had been handed to him, a long time ago in a town not far from the Alliance gates.
"We of the Alliance knew little about the world we inhabited, until one scholar came forth many years ago, before any of you were born, to donate a scroll that he had kept safe for many many years. It explained, in short, that the planet we inhabit is very large compared to the others around us. Yes my sons and daughters, there are other planets floating in a vast blackness that accompany ours. It is hard to comprehend, but imagine a large bowl of soup with many potatoes perhaps."
The children laughed, one of them saying quietly that now he was hungry. Grey gave the boy a smile and kept on his story.
"Her planetary name is Dask, and she orbits our large star, that great ball of fire in the sky that is always there everyday, once every year. This star is very large indeed, hundreds and thousands of times bigger then Dask, and her name is Ixen."
At this he stopped, waiting for the less developed brains of the room to catch up. Most of the children nodded in understanding, while some still remained a little lost.
"Do not fear children, there will be time to catch up," Grey explained reassuringly, "but for now, let us continue."
Nashiro walked quietly in, sitting beside one of the other Familiars, asking what was going on. The other Familiar explained excitedly, and they kept listening. "I haven't heard this story in a long time," Nashiro thought to himself.
"Now, though there are other planets around us, there is also two satellites, err, moons rather, that orbit our planet, as you all know. The largest satellite is named Thoros, and he rotates around our planet every day once. Now, the other satellite, her name is Pace, and she is much smaller compared to Thoros. She travels a full circle around us every two days, because she is much further from us than her brother. Now you must understand, the reason we can see them both at the same time some days, but not other days, is that they work in opposite orbits around us. While one is here." Grey motions with his fingers at the top of an imaginary circle. "The other one could be here!". Points at the bottom of the imaginary circle. "Or here!" Points to the top right above his first hand.
He looked to his audience, who all appeared very intrigued by what he was saying.
He sighed after the brief moment of excitement, noticing Nashiro in the corner. They both exchanged brief glances. Nashiro didn't have that "I need to talk to you right away" gaze that accompanied troubling news, so he kept going, smiling a little in relief.
"So now that we know all about the cosmic side of our story, lets look at our beautiful and wonderful Dask. When we stand on her, the sun rises in the west and sets in the east, just like normal, and the waves come up and down and up and down, just like we know. But what we may not know is that those waves also have a name. Her name is Jennu'qumado, and she is large and vast, covering a large portion of Dask's belly." At this he pushed his belly out and impersonated Dask, waves beating about his belly, making crashing sounds. The children laughed, some of them following his lead, making sounds and calling out the ocean name. Grey smiled at happy smile. They were learning.
Nashiro made his way over to Grey's arm chair, and sat down right beside him. Just then, a soft chime rang in through the window.
"Oh there's the bell tower children, off to your next lessons!" The children scrabbled off the floor, grabbing sacks and papers off desks and running out.
"Good bye! Until tomorrow!" Many said good bye, and very soon, Grey and Nashiro were alone in the room. The bells stopped chiming, and the noise died down. And everything was silent. Grey sat and enjoyed his chair for a few minutes, before pulling himself up and strolling out, Nashiro close behind.
