Second-in-Command characters serve very important purposes on their respective ships. If the Captain dies, or is otherwise incapable of making a decision, the Second-in-Command will make it for them. They are the closest and trusted advisors of the Captain, and because of their closeness to the rest of the crew, they are invaluable spies as well.
