All the history books agree on one thing as for the origin of Familiars: it happened a very long time ago, before the Guild or even their predecessors. It is believed that an ancient and powerful mage, something like a Serendith of our age, stumbled one day on an ancient scroll in his ancestors palace. The scroll contained a powerful spell, a spell that allowed the speaker to summon an animal spirit. The scroll did not foretell what spirit would arise from it, but the mage paid this no heed.
After many days of collecting the necessary components, and there were many, and hours of strenuous potion mixing, rituals and incantations to appease the various spirits and forces surrounding our world, a flash of red and a blue circle had appeared on the stone floor before him. And from this rose the first Familiar, appearing from the center of the ring as if from the floor. At first, the mage states in his journal, "the animal appeared bright blue, glowing in afternoon light" but says after "then colours began to form, shapes and textures appearing and disappearing until a solid form was concluded". - Tome 15, Paragraph 23, Lines 10-15
The animal was a grey cat, and it was forever bonded to the ancient mage who bravely summoned it.
He was the first to carry the gift, and he eventually passed the scroll, as well as the gift embedded magically into his genetic code from father to child on into the future, until everyone alive in the land had the same gift he was granted.
And here in our world, in our time, where a life without our most dearest and closest partners, allies and friends would be a life not worth living at all.
